Updating unlocked iphone 2g
Maybe different versions of i OS unlock in different ways???I had to unlock a 3gs that was locked to vodafone to allow it to connect to Telstra for a trip up North WA. I have an original iphone and AT&T refused to unlock. Can this phone be changed so updating the OS won't re-apply the AT&A lock?I have seen a lot of comments about "Jailbreaking" i Phone's, would that solve this problem?my experience was with 2x iphone 2G i bought wen they initially came out in the USA and imported them to use, I JB them and after the iphone 3 came out i gave them to family overseas to use.after visiting them last month i was surprised to see the 2x iphone2g were still being used and they wanted me to update it which i did but as a result the phone was locked because i did not have the AT&T sim card that i left back in Australia to unlock it via itunes and i thought i was left with 2 bricks.(although he admitted he was not 100% sure on that) Now Fast Mobile told me if I update with i Tunes the phone will lock up, so now I'm left in a quandary, do I take the risk or not? I've unlocked i Phones before from Telstra and Optus, and neither time did I have those simcards in there. Just have your PC on the internet while you hook the phone up, i Tunes should be happy to unlock. but to be honest you're going to have to restore to see if its unlocked or not.
Needless to say after the update Itunes couldnt unlock it because it said I did not have a valid simcard in there (ie the vodafone sim it came with) luckily i had this with me, i placed it in and it contacted the online servers and sure enough the phone was unlocked to be used with the local sim of that country..Frustrating stuff this :-( Did you have any SIM card in there? Not even an AT&T SIM, maybe like Optus, Vodafone, Telstra, anything. However, something you can try is this which you can do before you upgrade through i Tunes.
There's a possibility that it was automagically unlocked since the 3GS has been out for so long, but it's worth a try.
It's IMEI really needs to be submitted to AT&T to then request APple to unlock it properly for good.
